North Star Credit Union Awards Scholarships to Local Students

Demonstrating its dedication to education, North Star Credit Union (NSCU) has awarded $3,000 in scholarships to deserving students for the 2023-2024 school year

“We are deeply committed to investing in the future of our students,” said Jennifer Stedt, Chief Executive Officer for NSCU. “Providing scholarships aligns with our mission and the values we uphold. We are incredibly proud of the hard work and achievement of our area students”

This year’s scholarship recipients include:
$500 North Woods – Addy Hartway
$500 Nashwauk – Claire Clusiau
$500 Brooks – Keira Morinville
$500 Duluth – Kristi Jensen
$500 MI-B – Isabelle Mattson
$500 Rock Ridge – Lynette Pearson

For the past 37 years, NSCU has made a significant impact on youth education through its scholarship program and financial education, awarding $45,150 in scholarships throughout the years.

What began in 1987 with a $300 scholarship to one student at its Cook branch has grown into a $3,000 annual commitment, benefitting students across branches including Brooks, Cook, Duluth, Nashwauk, Rock Ridge, and Mountain Iron-Buhl.

As NSCU has expanded, so has its initiative to support financial education. NSCU’s team is dedicated to providing financial education opportunities in the school. Their staff has read in area schools, volunteered at school functions, and provided financial education in the classroom.

NSCU’s efforts have garnered statewide and national recognition including the prestigious Desjardins Financial Education Award, with the most recent one being in 2020.

“The scholarships are another way to provide to our students and give back to our communities,” said Stedt. “We believe in empowering our youth and supporting their educational journeys. Seeing their growth and success motivates us to continue this vital work.”

NSCU offers scholarships in the amount of $500 open to the branches and areas served. There has also been a student intern scholarship in the amount of $750 to $1,000. This is another way the credit union works with the local school districts to provide on-the-job experience and career skills.
