COOK, Minn. – North Star Credit Union (NSCU) has been recognized statewide for practicing the credit union philosophy of “people helping people.”

NSCU has been honored with a 2023 Louise Herring Philosophy in Action Member Service Award.

The award, sponsored by the Minnesota Credit Union Network (MnCUN) and the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), recognizes its practical application of the “people helping people” philosophy in internal operations.

Created in 1990, this award promotes the credit union philosophy by formally recognizing credit unions that demonstrate in an extraordinary way the application of the movement’s principles in serving their members.

The credit union was honored for the “Providing Guidance for the Financial Future of Our Membership.” program, which was done by responding to the needs of members after the pandemic. NSCU did this by offering a vehicle promotional rate for the summer, increasing certificate of deposit rates, and continuing a promotional unsecured debt rate.

“We are honored to receive this recognition from MnCUN,” said Jennifer Stedt, Chief Operating Officer of NSCU. “It means a lot to us to be honored with this award.”

The Credit Union’s winning entry will advance to the national competition, where it will compete with other credit unions in other states.

Louise Herring was an active supporter, organizer, and champion of credit unions.  She was the Ohio delegate to the 1934 national credit union conference in Estes Park, CO where she signed the original constitution for a national credit union association. 

Louise believed that credit unions should work in a practical manner to better people’s lives.  She saw the credit union as more than just a financial institution.  In her own words, “the purpose of the credit union is to reform the financial system, so that everyone can have his place in the sun.”
