Financial Education is a passion for North Star
REcognized statewide & nationally for our student programs
North Star Credit Union values our relationships with our school districts. We have a financial education specialist who delivers student education and events. We have been recognized statewide and nationally for our work with Student Education Programs in the schools. We have received four first place Desjardins Youth Financial Education Awards acknowledging the credit union’s continued commitment to provide financial education. Our student groups have formed focus groups that meet weekly to discuss financial topics. They also host Lunch and Learns, which are an opportunity for students to gain financial knowledge on topics, such as renting an apartment, finding a job, and understanding credit scores. Student members also have an opportunity to go on field trips to receive hands-on financial experience. They have taken trips to the Department of Commerce, Minnesota Credit Union Network, and the State Capitol.
Internships

Cook and Nashwauk branches of North Star Credit Union offer a paid internship for student members. Interns earn money while learning. The internship provides on the job experience, interview skills, references for future employment, proper work etiquette, and career skills. Student interns are also eligible for the scholarship opportunity.

Student Branches

North Star Credit Union has two student-run credit union branches at North Woods and South Ridge Schools. The student workers learn professional skills, while promoting money saving skills to the other students. We offer services to meet the banking needs of students, faculty, and parents. We enjoy partnering with the schools to have our credit union branches in the schools. We are also open to looking at other areas where we can branch out into the community.
Family Fun Night
The Family Fun Night is one of our member’s favorite events. This yearly carnival event is held at the schools for the elementary students and their families. It features a mix of financial education and other games for attendees to enjoy. We encourage our community to come together for a fun night out.
